Action alert: Stop Medicaid Cuts

An action alert has been posted to the TAHC&H action alert center about potential cuts to Medicaid funding as a result of federal healthcare reform. Only 94 calls and messages have been sent so far to our U.S. Senators!

As Congress and the Senate contemplates changes to health care, in particular to the delivery and funding of Medicaid, we must be vigilant that home care services are not negatively affected. The Texas Legislature made the decision not to accept funding to help encourage a balanced budget. We do not want this funding decision should not put Texas in a more negative position compared to other states.

Please call or write your U.S. Senators to request that Texas be treated fairly compared to other states and that home care programs are preserved.

The Per Capita Caps Medicaid model under consideration caps the federal government's share of Medicaid expenses and shifts unmet needs to the states. This is likely to result in decreased funding to the states and Texas. Each state must then come up with additional funding, or make cuts to Medicaid benefits. Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) are optional benefits and thereby face the greatest risks when funding is limited.

Among the Medicaid changes passed by the U.S. House is the elimination of the Community First Choice Program, which was designed to accelerate the rebalancing of Medicaid spending towards care in the home. We believe that this program should continue as home care is the most cost effective way to deliver health care services and reduce overall spending.

It is vital that you contact your Senators to let them know how any further reductions will affect patients, you, and your business and the vulnerable population that relies on Medicaid.
