Capitol Insights: Week 1

By Elyse Fulton posted Jan 12,2017 05:28 PM

Tuesday was the first day out of 140 days of the 85th Texas Legislative Session. The first day ushered in crop of new legislators, but mostly included seasoned ones.  TAHC&H has witnessed several first days of session and Tuesday's was about the most non-eventful one in a very long time.

The House elected Speaker Joe Straus once again. This year, however, he ran uncontested and was elected speaker unanimously (150-0).  This speaks volumes about his leadership qualities. The Senate elected Senator Kel Seliger (District 31) as their Speaker Pro Tempore. Senator John Whitmire (District 15) is the Dean of the Senate.

On Thursday, TAHC&H Government Relations & Public Policy Director Sarah Mills visited the office of every Freshman legislator to familiarize them with our association. TAHC&H is continuing to monitor the filing of bills and we expect this to pick up since all members (freshman and veterans) have been sworn in. The announcement of committees for both the House and Senate is expected by months end or early February.

Stay tuned for updates posted to our Capitol Insights 2017 Texas Legislative Session Resource Center. You can also sign up to attend our state Lobby Days on February, March 1, and April 5. Additionally, please attend or sponsor our 2017 Legislative Reception honoring the 85th Legislature.
